Welcome

Welcome to Adnams Bio Energy – a facility designed, built and operated by Bio Group.

Work on ‘cuttting edge’ renewable gas plant gets underway click here

Adnams Bio Energy is an Energy Park with Anaerobic Digestion at its heart, a process where microbes break down food waste material to release energy.

Bio Group exists to make a difference. Our work reduces greenhouse gas emissions, through a network of renewable energy facilities.  We take the problem of food waste and convert it cleanly and safely into energy.

Bio Group is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tackling climate change both in what we do and how we do it.

Bio Group and Adams – working in partnership

Adnams plc has for many years been reducing its impact on the environment. In 2006 it became one of the first UK retailers to actively work on light weighting its packaging, successfully reducing the weight of its 500ml beer bottle from 445g to 299g. It has also introduced a carbon-neutral beer.

Bio Group specialises in renewable energy and has a vast amount of experience in design and construction of AD plants.  Therefore Bio Group had the technology to turn Adnams Brewery waste into green energy and Adnams had the plot of land at their eco distribution centre that could be used for the new AD centre.

How does it work?

AD works like our digestive system. When we eat, the bacteria and enzymes in our stomach work to break down food into waste by producing gas and fertiliser. In the same way, the Adnams Bio Energy plant consists of three digesters which are sealed vessels in which naturally-occurring bacteria act without oxygen to break down up to 12,000 tonnes of organic waste each year. The result is the production of biomethane and liquid fertiliser.

Our AD process here at Southwold:

• will take up to 25,000 tonnes of food per year and using a natural process, convert that into around 1.2  million cubic metres of green gas.
• is completely organic; nothing is wasted. There are no unpleasant by products or smells.
• produces a natural liquid fertiliser and compost that can be used to replace chemicals on farmland.

By making a difference

our Adnams Bio Energy plant will produce 9.6 million Kilowatt-hours per year – that is enough to run an average family car for nearly 9 million miles.

a vehicle powered by biomethane will have up to 200% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions when using biomethane rather than diesel.

our Adnams Bio Energy site will remove 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents from landfill every year and will help Adnams plc reduce their carbon footprint by upto 50% over 5 years.

our Adnams Bio Energy has installed solar thermal panels and photo voltaic cells which, combined with the anaerobic digestion facility, form a fully integrated energy park.

What are the benefits?

Adnams Bio Energy will have a considerable impact on the reduction of carbon emissions in the region. The food waste would otherwise be destined for landfill, but processing it through the digester will save an estimated 50,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents from landfill. In addition, there will also be a positive impact on the local economy with an estimated 5% saving in landfill costs for every customer who uses the facility.
